Protect Yourself From Identity Theft

on December 21, 2008by Shelly Evansin Credit Repair, Credit Report, Others

Every year, it is estimated that about 10 million people in the US will become victims of crimes related to fraud and identity theft.

Past cases have proven that many consumers have been victimized by Identity Thieves without their slightest awareness. It was only when creditors start to contact them that they became aware of charges they never made.

Young people with credit cards are also prone to identity theft and fraud. Some students use their student credit cards carelessly especially when shopping online.

But you’re a young person or an adult, what can you do to protect yourself from identity theft? Here are some tips:

Don’t throw credit card receipts and billing statements in trash.

Yes, even used ATM receipts can be used to commit fraud. Make sure that you shred your bills into very small pieces before discarding them.

Use your ATM discreetly.

When using the ATM, make sure that no one is watching behind your back or is standing anywhere near you.

Keep your credit card in sight at all times.

When using your credit cards in restaurants, it’s best to take it to the cashier yourself than to hand to the waiter. Some people use very small “skimming” devices that can copy your credit card information in just seconds.

Do not give any of your personal information to anyone over the phone.

If someone calls you to get your Social Security Number or bank account number for “verification purposes”, do not entertain the caller. Put the phone down immediately.

Do not respond to suspicious e-mails requiring you to give out any information.

If you received an e-mail that seems to have come from your bank or from a reputable company, call that company for verification.

Be careful about filling out your personal information online.

Never fill out online information forms unless you’re 100% certain that you’re using a secured website.

Call your bank right away if your billing statements do not reach you on time.

If your billing statements do not reach you on time, contact your bank right away. Someone may have called your bank and changed your billing your address without your knowledge.
